Develop you Fashion culture at home

ESMOD Paris  |  France news

It's a harsh reality to live in a city where all of the fantastic museums are closed for the duration of a confinement that continues to last! Fortunately, technology comes to the rescue and brings some culture to your home, in a digital form.
We have found that many of the exhibits scheduled for spring 2020 are now accessible online via the museums' websites: Pompéi at Le Grand Palais, Figures d'Artistes at Le Louvre...

Here is ESMOD's selection of fashion exhibits you can access from your sofa:

 - ROUGE at The National Library  (Bibliothèque Nationale)
An exhibit that will take you through the history of this strong color, its symbolism, its uses and its role in the dressing room of the stage. A guided tour is available by Christian Lacroix and Michel Pastoureau.

- The thematic files of the "Musée des Arts Décoratifs"
Dive back into the MAD collections through thematic files that retrace a chronology of fashion from 1715 to 1914, the world of jewellery, advertising, etc... And a particularly interesting dossier on Edouard Bénédictus, a great figure of Art Deco who devoted himself to scenic design between 1918 and 1920.

You can also take the opportunity to take a short virtual tour of the museum, passing by Jeanne Lanvin's boudoir, bedroom and bathroom!

-  The collections at Palais Galliera
Pending its reopening, initially scheduled for March 2020, the Palazzo Galliera offers a quick but qualitative review of its collections (from the 18th to the 20th century). Suits, Haute Couture, lingerie, accessories, graphic arts... treat yourself to a teaser of the museum's treasures before you can go and admire them in real life.

-Instagram Culture with the Fabric Museum of Lyon
The museum offers on its Instagram account an overview of its collections, with a twist: 1 day, 1 work. Enough to discover and expand your mind in the span of a few weeks. Instagram account:

And we have saved the best for last:

- Google Arts & Culture
This site is a gold mine of virtual exhibits of all kinds where fashion plays an important role. In addition to the fact that many museums have made it their official platform for virtual exhibitions, many major brands have unveiled the treasures of their heritage. This is what ESMOD has done in 2017, as part of the We Wear Culture project, by presenting 4 exhibits that will help you rediscover the history of our school: see ESMOD exhibitions

Here is a small selection of the best fashion exhibitions on Google Arts & Culture:

- La Mode à Versailles : Elle  / La Mode à Versailles : Lui
- Couturiers de la danse
- Anthology Jin Teok, creation of 50 years
- Schiaparelli et le surréalisme
- Iconic Designs : Fashion and Style of the 20th Century
- Cristobal Balenciaga, l'expérience du Luxe
- Faces of Frida

To deepen your knowledge of (traditional) clothing, textiles, crafts, sustainable development, etc..:

- Le Making Of, l'art et les histoires derrière vos vêtements

And about the History and Sociology of Fashion:

- Les courants, de la cours de Versailles aux rues de Tokyo

We hope that these selections of fashion culture will bring you joy and nourish your creativity.

Best wishes during this time of confinement. ESMOD is always with you!
