This October, Esmod opens its first Fashion University in Dubai at Academic City. The Dubai University will offer three different programmes. The first is a three-year BFA Diploma course covering fashion design and pattern drafting. The second programme is a two-year certificate course in the same, while the third programme – various morning and night classes - is open to the public.The University is hoping to attract all fashion enthusiasts and professionals, both male and female.
“As of yet there is no prominent or famous fashion designer from the UAE,” says Denis Ravizza, managing director of Esmod Dubai. “But there is no reason why we can’t make some local talent here famous. The culture has a lot to offer fashion. Just look at how the simple abaya has transformed over the years into more elaborate and fashionable designs.”
But, it is not just fashion students that the University plans to call on. Ravizza says they will also be targeting professionals in Dubai’s retail industry too. “Our research has shown that when many retail outlets opened in Dubai, expats without specific fashion qualifications were hired to look after the shops or brands. Our goal, with the opening of the University is to offer specialised classes for professionals already working in the fashion industry, so that they can brush up on their fashion skills.”
One would think a Fashion University in Dubai - one of the shopping capitals in the world - has been a long time coming, but Ravizza explains that although they always had their eye on Dubai they only opened this year, because Dubai wasn’t ready before. “We didn’t establish a University in Dubai even three years ago, because fashion awareness was weak. We had to wait for all the malls to be up and running and for certain brands to set up in Dubai first. People are now seduced by fashion in Dubai now, so it is time for our University too.”
So if you always fancied yourself as the next Tom Ford or Donna Karen, now you can do something about it. Esmod International Dubai is now accepting applications.
